Seniors Care Services

Provided by Hornby Denman Health

This program offers a wide range of community-based supports to help seniors and residents of Denman and Hornby Islands remain safe, independent, and connected.
Services Include:

Information and Care Coordination: The Care Coordinator provides assistance to seniors and community members by answering questions, helping them access services and supports, connecting them with health providers, and coordinating access to equipment through the Equipment Loans Program. The Care Coordinator is available Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The annual Comox Valley Seniors Resource Guide includes dedicated pages for Denman and Hornby Island residents. Hard copies are available at key community locations, or by calling the number below.

Help Around the Home: Housekeeping, light yard work, laundry, help with firewood, and bulk meal preparation are some of the things that we would be happy to help with!

Grocery Shopping & Delivery: Offers assistance with grocery shopping, either by delivering food directly to your door or accompanying you to the store so you can select your items.

Medication, Parcel & Library Pick-ups: On-island medication pickups, as well as mail, parcels and items from the library.

Transportation to Appointments: Assist with rides to island clinics or health-related appointments in town.

Garbage & Recycling Pick-ups: Assist in taking out the trash or taking recycling into the depot.

Friendly Visits & Companionship Care: Provides assistance with meal preparation, support for projects, or companionship while your spouse or family member is away from home.

Extreme Weather Registry: Helps Island seniors prepare for weather-related events by identifying emergency contacts, setting up check-in and follow-up protocols, and addressing other potential needs that may arise during extreme conditions.

The Nav-CARE program: offers specially trained volunteer navigators to help people access resources and services in Denman and Hornby communities while providing companionship and emotional support.

Seniors Day Program: Provides a space for seniors to connect with peers in a fun, supportive environment. Participants enjoy good conversation and a hot meal prepared by some of the island’s favourite cooks. Activities are shaped by the group's interests and may include guided chair yoga or tai chi, friendly card games, or learning opportunities on topics of shared interest. Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas and suggestions forward. Transportation is coordinated when needed.

Seniors Transportation: This program helps seniors get to essential appointments through door-to-door transportation service. Individuals who need assistance travelling to health-related appointments on Denman or Hornby Islands, or within the Comox Valley, can receive support through this service. Transportation is provided by trained volunteer drivers.

Please Note: Some Home Assist services are free of charge (medication pick-ups, transportation to appointments, and friendly visits with a volunteer). Other services have a set fee, and some are charged on an hourly basis. There is a sliding scale ($0-$35) for hourly fees based on income. No one will be turned away if they cannot pay. Any fees or money raised is fed back into the program to serve more people.
